Membership Guidelines
Any person having reached their 18th birthday, who is a citizen of the United States and of good character, is eligible for election as a member of our organization.

All new applicants for membership will be presented by the Membership Chairman at the first monthly regular business meeting of the Company that follows the submission of the applicant's required forms and dues.
Following acceptance into the Company, all new members will begin their probationary period of six (6) months. In addition, Active Members must meet all of the certification requirements and pass a Rescue 15 familiarization test administered by the Chief or his/her designee before being released from probation.
A Member in Good Standing must attend a minimum of eight (8) monthly regular business meetings of the Company over the last twelve (12) month period and be current with their membership dues in accordance with Article 16 of the SVFD By-Laws. Meeting absences may be excused by the Chief or the President for such things as training and will not be counted as an absence.
All members will be forbidden to vote on Company business or during elections until they have met the requirements of a Member in Good Standing as described above.
All members are expected to participate in both social and fundraising events as well as monthly Company meetings.
Any member not meeting the qualifications of Active Membership will be considered a Social Member.

Active Member
Active Members are those members that are qualified to perform the duties of a firefighter and staff Rescue 15. All Active Members are expected to ride/man Rescue 15 at least one evening per week, depending on the current schedule set forth by the Chief.
Active members are required to have the minimum certifications as listed below:
- State of Connecticut Firefighter I
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification
- Annual Bloodborne Pathogens Training
- Annual Hazmat Operational Level certification
Active Member without the above certifications will be classified as a Red Helmet Member and identified by wearing a red helmet.
Active Members with the above certifications will be classified as a Probationary Active Member until such time they successfully pass the Rescue 15 familiarization test and they have been a member for a minimum of six (6) months.
Probationary Active Members will be identified by wearing a black helmet with an orange reflective front shield marked "Probationary".
Before being allowed to ride Rescue 15, an Active Member candidate must submit the following documentation:
- Documentation from personal physician that you are "fit to perform the duties of a firefighter".
- Documentation that you have successfully passed a spirometry test within the last twelve (12) months.
- Documentation that you have received a PPD test and tested negative for Tuberculosis within the last twelve (12) months.
- Documentation that you have been immunized against Hepatitis B or that you are refusing such immunization.
- Proof of current certification for "Healthcare Provider CPR".
Red Helmet Members are those Active Membership candidates that have not met the certification requirements of Active Membership and are identified by wearing a red helmet.
Red Helmet Members may ride Rescue 15 as long as they have provided the documentation required to ride.
Red Helmet Members shall act in a support role at the scene of an emergency. The Red Helmet Member will stay back with Rescue 15 and assist the driver and/or officer as needed.
At no time shall a Red Helmet Member enter a burning building, take part in fire suppression activites, or operate in a dangerous / hazardous environment except as part of a supervised training activity.
Red Helmet Members that hold a current State of Connecticut MRT/EMT/Paramedic license may provide medical assistance at EMS calls and at scenes declared as safe by the on-duty Rescue 15 officer.
Upon successful completion of the required Active Membership certifications, a Red Helmet Member will be issued a black helmet with an orange Probationary front shield and be considered a Probationary Active Member.

Social Members
Social Members participate in Company business and may hold a Company Executive Officer position.
Social Members do not staff Rescue 15 nor can they hold any Line Officer position.

Dues
The amount of dues for the coming year shall be set at the annual meeting which takes place each year in the month of May. All Member Dues are due at the time of the annual meeting and are collected by the Financial Secretary. Any member not paying dues within three months from the time they are due, shall be considered in arrears and shall be notified by the Financial Secretary. If the member remains in arrears for one month, the member shall be reported at a regular monthly meeting as a delinquent member and shall be considered suspended from the Company without further action.
The current Annual Dues amount is $15.00 and is required at the time of application for new members.
